Child Protection Policy

Throughout our communities on a daily basis much valued work with children and young people is carried out by both clergy and laity. This can be paid or voluntary. We consider this work to be invaluable evangelism and outreach to our young. A tragic reality within our society today is predatory adults attempt to infiltrate any one of our public services and organisation with the sole intention of abusing children or young people. This can happen within any professional organisation and we only have to read our newpapers to witness these foul acts of indecency and evil. It is fair to say that churches all around the world are probably no more vulnerable than other organisations. We have created and maintained a policy and indeed culture of informed vigilance to protect and promote the emotional, spiritual and physical welfare of all God’s young.

We have incorporated a non-negotiable policy:

Safe recruitment and incardination of clergy involving an enhanced CRB.

Nevertheless, there is a great need for liturgical revolution so as to meet local and specific needs of small faith groups and Home Eucharistic Movements, for example. The list is not exhaustive. Volunteers must also have a CRB check. A comprehensive appropriate and proportionate ‘Pathway of Action’ is in place should concerns ever arise about a child or young person, or indeed concerns about the behaviour of an adult towards a child, or children or young person. A designated Child Protection Officer and administrator has the responsibility towards the safe selection of volunteers and clergy which incorporates definite policy including a duty of care for children within any church or faith community member of our Churches. If any crime is identified within the CRB check especially those which can never be deemed as 'Spent' under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, no offer of membership for clergy, priests in formation or volunteer lay workers will be granted. Other convictions identified will be treated in the strictest of confidence. Certain convictions (ie: arrest following peaceful protest) will be viewed with integrity. This document is not intended to be exhaustive and further advice, training or guidance will always be available and actively sought by our Child Protection Advisor who can be accessed via the 'Contact Us' page.
