| Our Lady of Lourdes ECC+C Pilgrimage 2010 Below the story of Bernadette is a photographic journey around Lourdes I made which started on the 6th of August, the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. If you have been yourself already I really hope these pictures rekindle the feeling you would have sensed, of the joy of being a Christian and the overwhelming sense of warmth and love it blesses you with. If you have never been before, please consider it as something you could do as a pilgrim or volunteer. I don't mean that to sound patronising, I just want as many people as possible to experience the many spiritual gifts there. I have never witnessed such peace and love amongst so many strangers from differing countries and cultures. In the aftermath of the bomb scare at Lourdes on the day of the Assumption, just days after I left (of all the days to attempt to hurt the Mother of God), it is more urgent to stand and be counted in the face of Christian oppression and anti-Catholic actions which can only be described as absolute evil. It horrifies me that any person(s) would want to violate anywhere this loving, spiritual and Godly, even if they doubt the reality of what was witnessed by a young girl during her difficult but blessed life. NMD The story of young Bernadette Soubirous of Lourdes Bernadette Soubirous is the saint of Lourdes, France. Visionary and messenger of the Immaculate Conception, she told us the very words of the Virgin Mary, spoken in the native Basque tongue of Southern France and Northern Spain. She spoke words teaching of the merits of prayer, penance, poverty and church. In the first and most widely recognized Marian apparition of modern times, a personal message was delivered also to Bernadette - She would not find happiness in this world, but only in the next.
She was to die twenty one years later in 1879 after a prolonged and painful illness. She remained hidden in a convent about 300 miles from home, a refuge from the interrogations - some of which were cruel and disbelieving - and the pilgrims that never ceased seeking her. At thirty five, her strong will gave way to her frail body, and she finally entered into her eternal happiness. While she took with her the knowledge of certain secrets the Virgin gave her, one secret remained hidden in our presence. The most spectacular of all the incorruptibles, Bernadette's miraculously preserved body remained buried in a damp grave for thirty years until the cause for beatification was taken up. To this day, the body of Bernadette is a profound source of inspiration and of mystery surrounding the ways of the Lord. The face of Bernadette is one of surreal beauty, and will remain for us always the face that gazed into the eyes of the Mother of God. The saint of Lourdes, penance and poverty ... Our Lady's child-visionary is also to many, the saint of family. Born on January the 7th in 1844 this was an era of prosperity for her family. Her parents and younger siblings lived in an environment of deep love and devotion for each other. However, hard times soon fell on agricultural France, and worse yet, a string of seemingly endless bad luck fell on the Soubirous family. Put to the test time and again, Bernadette and her family discovered the meaning of unconditional commitment.
In desperation, illness, and poverty, the oldest of the Soubirous children began having mysterious visions at the age of fourteen. The combination of sophisticated revelations and Bernadette's simplicity were a certain confirmation of the reality of these apparitions. The region was soon in uproar over the events. The apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary spanned only six months, but no relief came to the Soubirous family. The events at Lourdes only magnified the trials of Bernadette and her family, leading to persecution by many non believers and religious authorities, alike.
Consolation eventually came as the Roman Catholic Church, having been previously cruel to the child Bernadette, constantly testing her, interviewing her and doubting her, confirmed the apparitions and construction began on the sanctuary at the Grotto of Massabielle before Bernadette even left for Nevers. As for Bernadette, she experienced utter destitution and divine light simultaneously and with dignity- how many could honestly say they could do the same?
The Boly Mill pictured right was Bernadette's first home. Less than a year after Bernadette was born, her mother Louise suffered a burn injury while pregnant with her second child. Bernadette was sent to a nurse at Bartrès and returned eleven months later after the younger child had died. There were eventually to be nine children born to Louise and François Soubirous, of which only four survived childhood. Three years later, François was blinded in the left eye in a milling accident at the Boly Mill, which was also the family's home. Crops were poor and famine struck France. In 1854, with work sparse, the Soubirous were turned out from the Boly Mill. They wandered from one boarding house to another, turned out each time for failing to meet their bills. Bernadette was 11 years old when she was caring for her three younger siblings as her parents were forced to find work each day. When a cholera epidemic swept through town, Bernadette was stricken and she was to suffer with severe asthma for the rest of her short life. To help her family survive, she worked for a time as a waitress in her aunt's inn. Failing again to meet their rent in May 1856, the family was left homeless. A cousin took pity on them and allowed them to stay in an abandoned prison cell that was in a building he owned. "Le Cachot" (the 'lock up' as seen left) was little more than 12 feet square. At this point the family was poverty stricken. With no food to eat, François was suspected of stealing two sacks of flour and imprisoned for eight days, the charges were shortly dismissed, but he was left with a reputation as a thief. In the darkness of this destitution the Soubirous maintained the light of their faith. Evenings in the 'Cachot' were spent in family prayer. They attended mass frequently, and on Sundays they assisted in the services within the parish. Louise and François recited the rosary many times a day and taught the children to do the same. Bernadette owned her own rosary beads and carried them with her at all times. Towards the end of 1857, she was sent once more to her nurse in Bartrès to work as a farmhand. She had food there and so there was one less mouth to feed for her parents. However, there was no school or catechism to prepare for her first Communion which upset her greatly.
Persistent and decisive, Bernadette persuaded her mistress and family to allow her to return to Lourdes. She could not remain away from the reading lessons which she needed to complete her catechism and finally receive her first Communion. In January, 1858, at almost 14 years of age, she returned to the misery of the Cachot and entered a pauper's school where she learned in the company of 7 year olds. Only three weeks were to pass before a desperate search for firewood led Bernadette to her first encounter with Our Lady of Lourdes.
One of the ECC+C's communities is named after St Bernadette, this young girl who gazed into the eyes of the Mother of God. Many churches and/or parishes are named after a particular saint. I wonder how many people take for granted the saint's earthly life every time they attend services in the building named after them? On the left, I am lighting a candle for us all. When I prayed at the grotto I also placed my Visitation and Prayer books under a trickle of the Holy Water (seen right, sadly the picture quality is poor) which runs from the rock beneath Our Lady's statue. This marks the very spot Bernadette was spoken to by the Mother of God. Behind me was a young woman moved to tears by the spirit of all things good. I offered her comfort which, given we were total strangers from different countries, she accepted as though I was her friend. I have never felt anything as peaceful in my life and unless I return, I doubt I ever will.
At the ninth apparition, Mary asked Bernadette to scrape the ground, saying to her "Go to the spring, drink of it and wash yourself there." There was only a little muddy water to begin with, enough for Bernadette to drink. The spring signifies the cleansing of the human heart, wounded by wrong doing yet healed through prayer. Bernadette was asked by the authorities what 'the lady' said to her. She replied, "Now and again she would say, 'penance, penance, penance, pray for sinners as praying leads us to the Spirit of God'. During the thirteenth apparition Our Lady said to Bernadette "Go and tell the priests to come here in procession and build a chapel." The word procession, in Lourdes dialect, means a pilgrimage outside of one's parish into other parishes to meet with the people of God on their journey through life. On March 25, 1858, the day of the sixteenth Apparition, Bernadette went to the Grotto because the then parish priest, Abbé Peyramale, kept asking Bernadette to request the 'Lady's' name. Three times Bernadette asked her what her name was. On the fourth request, the Lady responded in dialect 'Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou' (I am the Immaculate Conception). Bernadette did not understand the meaning of these words but the priest understood completely that it was the Mother of God who appeared to this young girl at the Grotto of Massabielle. In Lourdes today the nations of the Earth, all continents and countries, young and old, healthy and sick; meet in peace and brotherly/sisterly love. People walk through the grotto and pray, the religious sisters place their rosaries onto the rock and the priests hold their bibles and prayer books against the waters running down the side of the grotto. All people, healthy and not, take of the waters freely (no charges are requested) and all languages are spoken with a common understanding and everyone greets one another as their friend in shared belief. Every evening people carry a candle and process in solemn and deep prayer, together and in their tens of thousands, but in a strange sense of being alone with the Mother of God gently guiding us towards the peace of the Triune God of all mankind. The number of people in prayer, each carrying a candle, had to be seen to be believed. The atmosphere was one of total peace and humility. The faithful going into the Lourdes Cathedral for the service of healing. Many volunteer groups, made up of young and old, were there to care for those looking for spiritual peace. Having been a nurse for many years, I could see just how terribly sick some people were. They were there to make peace with our creator and not as some might think, for some kind of miracle. Of course, some do hope for physical healing but many people I saw had but days left on earth, and the healing they sought was for their souls. It was humbling to witness and a privilege to have been a part of. My greatest joy in this day and age of selfishness, intolerance and religious suspicion, was how fuelled with human tenderness it was. The service I attended was (as they mainly are) for prayers of healing. I attended wearing my clerical collar - something that some male clergy might have perceived as offensive, but I was treated with respect and again - love within a shared faith. I was allowed to sit to the right of the altar with the religious sisters who sat happily with me after they had taken people to the altar to drink of the Holy Water. Below left is everyone gathering for worship - the sick were taken to the priests at the altar. I didn't go near the altar (slowly, slowly as they say) as the male priests and maybe even some seeking healing might have found that impossible to cope with but the sisters seen above left allowed me to sit with them at the side. I had a wonderful opportunity to see the congregation of young and old, and of all the people brought to the altar to drink of the holy water. I realised that my presence as a woman priest, and my familiarity with the mass made it pretty obvious I am Catholic, was welcomed and not rejected by the sisters and many of the young faithful. More women priests should go and not fear the reaction as it was all good. It made me fully appreciate that the problems within the Roman Church do not rest with with anyone but the male priests. A group of young Christian people seen on the left - some able bodied, others with physical impairments - all having a ball together. Those seeking healing and those helping them to do so were all around the same age and there was a great bond between them. I will go back and God willing, the ECC+C will organise its own pilgrimage of volunteers taking those seeking healing with Father Rod and the prayer team of the National Guild of Christian Healers. I stress that healing of the body is not the main reason for people flocking here - it is for the healing of the soul and the healing of the world through prayerfully becoming closer to God in our day to day lives. This is one of the many gifts we receive from visiting Our Lady of Lourdes - the realisation that everyone must pray harder than they ever have before and then - pray, pray and pray again.
